Mud Bricks
Mud Brick Basics
- One of the oldest building materials (used for thousands of years)
- Made from: earth + water + straw/fibres
- Shaped in moulds and sun-dried
- Also known as adobe
- Very low environmental impact and embodied energy
Composition
- Clay content: ~30–70%
- May include silt, sand, gravel, and stones
- Should not contain organic matter
Making Mud Bricks
- Mix earth + water + fibres
- Place in moulds (wood/metal)
- Air dry evenly (avoid cracking)
Construction
- Built like masonry (courses + mud mortar)
- Thick mortar joints create a seamless/monolithic look
Structural Use
- Can be load-bearing
- Can also be used as infill in timber frames
- Suitable for arches, domes, and vaults
Why it is an Awesome Building Method
- High thermal mass (stores heat)
- Excellent sound insulation
- Fire-resistant (earth doesn’t burn)
- Resistant to pests
- Can last centuries with maintenance
- Very low energy to produce
- Materials often sourced on-site
- Recyclable and natural
